Chapter Eight

Chase

The weekend passed too quickly, and as evening drew closer, a strange sensation, almost like panic clawed at my insides. It was completely foreign to me. In business, in my personal relationships, I’d never felt this way, but the idea of Bella leaving to go back to her home bothered me to the deepest parts of my soul. She hadn’t actually moved in with me—yet. It was something I planned to remedy soon, but in the meantime, she thought she needed to go back to her apartment. Bullshit, but I hadn’t convinced her otherwise.

Maybe, my uneasiness was because she hadn’t declared her feelings as I had. I knew they were there, but she kept them locked away in a closed vault inside of her. She didn’t trust it. I got that. I just had to convince her this was real.

After breakfast on Saturday, we’d walked through the park. Down on the sidewalk, I’d caught her glancing up at my rooftop haven, her cheeks red as she no doubt gauged whether she could have been seen.

“Even if they did see something, no one could possibly tell it was you, and you probably gave them jack-off material for weeks,” I’d whispered in her ear. She’d swatted me playfully. It was just a small part of the lighthearted day together. I’d refused to do anything related to business, and I’d kept her mind firmly on our fun together. It had helped that Beanie loved every second of our time in the park. The tiny dog had raced around the penthouse after I’d closed doors but otherwise given her free-rein. I’d learned pretty quickly that Bella doted on that dog as much as if the tiny dachshund were her human child.

That afternoon, I’d pulled out a sketchpad and pencils I’d gotten for her, thinking she might want to sketch while she was at my place. They’d do until all her things were here, but I wasn’t telling her that part yet. We’d played a role-reversal of Jack and Rose from Titanic with me lying bare-chested on the couch while she drew me. Our outcome would be a hell of a lot better than that couple though. I’d do anything to keep Bella safe and at my side. The sooner the better.

While she’d gotten ready for me to take her out to Parmesan, one of the most exclusive restaurants in Manhattan, I’d gone into my home office and set things into motion to get her here permanently—something I’d have to tell her soon, but not before dinner.

She was gorgeous in the emerald gown we’d gotten from Bergdorf’s that day. She’d argued. I’d insisted. She’d argued more. I’d kissed her into submission. Of course, I’d won. And later, after the overly fancy, seriously tiny meal at a restaurant Bella had made me promise never to make her go to again, I’d claimed my prize. I’d pulled her into bed under me and taken great pleasure in peeling that sexy green dress off her body. While
